Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Questioning Participants in Treatment Court

Data on disparities in entrance into and graduation from treatment court is lacking for LGBQ participants. They are essentially invisible due to bias, discomfort in speaking about sexual orientation, not understanding what sexual orientation is, and multiple levels of stigma. As with other historically traumatized minority groups, issues specific to equity and inclusion need to be addressed. Treatment court teams need to understand the specific needs of LGBQ participants to take down access barriers and individualize their treatment to support them towards graduation. This module will address cultural competency through the development of health literacy skills in speaking about sexual orientation and issues of cultural humility like identifying and stopping micro-aggressions and collecting accurate data.
By the end of the training session, team members will be able to:
1. Identify where disparities occur with LGBQ individuals in court and treatment.
2. Define sexual orientation.
3. Explain the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity.
4. Identify several treatment needs of LGBQ participants.
5. Recognize specific barriers to meeting the needs of LGBQ participants
6. Identify specific strategies to overcome the barriers to LGBQ success.
