This article provides clinicians and researchers with the information regarding structured assessment instruments appropriate for their needs. For six widely used instruments, the article describes the validity and reliability characteristics, administration procedures, training requirements, and advantages and disadvantages based on patient population, treatment orientation, and staff skills. The instruments are as follows: (1) Addiction Severity Index, (2) Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), (3) Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (4) Alcohol Use Disorders and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule (5) Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders, and (6) Semi-Structured Assessment for Drug Dependence and Alcoholism.
