This publication provides the findings of a study that sought to determine whether or not recent physical or sexual victimization can lead to heightened substance abuse. They found that victimization within the past year is very strongly tied to increased substance use, especially with those experiencing depressive episodes. The researchers suggested that drug court professionals screen for people with such traumas and include more programming to help them.
